On studying at Bristol
My time as a master’s student in Law Studies at the University of Bristol was incredibly enriching. Academically, the insightful lectures and the serene libraries allowed me to focus on my studies and deepen my understanding of law, as well as hone my research skills. The diverse and inclusive community was a highlight for me – studying alongside classmates from across the globe gave me valuable perspectives on international legal practices and led to lasting friendships. Exploring Bristol, with its charming blend of history and modernity, added vibrancy to my experience and was a deeply rewarding chapter of my life.
On what inspires her to volunteer
As professionals, it’s easy to get caught up in our own fields and surround ourselves with similarly minded people. Volunteering with the Alumni Association helps break that pattern, allowing me to meet individuals from diverse professions and backgrounds. These interactions are always interesting and inspiring, offering new insights and reminding me of the value of diversity, and the sharing of ideas and experiences. It’s fulfilling to contribute to a community built on shared support and mutual growth.
As Vice-Chairperson for the Hong Kong Branch
Studying at Bristol has shaped my personal and professional development, and the Alumni Association has been my way to stay connected with this inspiring community. My journey with the Hong Kong Branch began during my Master’s. At the time, Professor Veronica Pearson (MSc 1971, Cert 1975) was Chair and she was an inspiring mentor. One of my first projects involved organising a traditional Hong Kong-style dinner in Bristol that brought together local and international alumni.
Now, as Vice-Chairperson for External Affairs of the Hong Kong Branch of the Alumni Association, I focus on strengthening bonds between Bristol graduates based in Hong Kong and organising engaging initiatives.
The Hong Kong Branch of the Alumni Association is dedicated to building connections and empowering our graduate community. We aim to inspire more individuals to study at the University of Bristol and central to our mission is a scholarship programme, which sponsors students from Hong Kong to pursue postgraduate studies in Bristol. By supporting world-class education, we nurture talent that drives innovation and leadership, shaping a brighter future for Hong Kong.
The importance of alumni networks
Over the past year, the alumni network in Hong Kong has organised at least one event every month – from alumni receptions, historical tours, welcoming the Vice-Chancellor, monthly socials and our annual Christmas Party. From historical tours to monthly social activities, my goal is to keep the Bristol spirit alive in Hong Kong, while building meaningful connections across communities.
Most recently, we organised an event as part of the University’s season of Global Gatherings, where Bristol graduates from around the world came together in their respective countries. At our global gathering event in Hong Kong, alumni and guests enjoyed a guided walking tour and a delightful traditional Hong Kong-style dinner, making it an unforgettable evening.
For me, it’s about more than just hosting events – it’s about strengthening ties between alumni and the University and creating opportunities for meaningful relationships to flourish. It’s an honour to contribute to the success and growth of the Hong Kong Alumni network.
