Bristol alumni and staff recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours list 2025

We are thrilled to announce that eighteen members of the University of Bristol community have been recognised in this year’s King’s Birthday Honours list. 

Each year, the King’s Birthday Honours mark extraordinary contributions made by individuals across the UK. We are immensely proud of the contributions made by members of the University of Bristol community and are delighted to see this recognition of their continued impact.  

 

Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire

Sir Charles Collins (LLB 1994). For services to the military.

Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) 

Professor Julie Fitzpatrick (PhD1992). Chief Scientific Adviser, Scottish Government.  For services to Science.

Dr Sara Hurley (BDS 1988). Lately Chief Dental Officer for England, NHS England. For services to Dentistry.

Mr Peter Hyman (BA 1991). Lately Senior Advisor to Sir Keir Starmer, Educationalist and Co-Founder, School 21 and Voice 21, and Founder, School 360. For services to Politics and to Education.

Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) 

Dr Christine Counsell (Med 1997). Director, Opening Worlds. For services to Education.

Mr Piers Frank Bruce Le Marquand (BSc 1988). Senior Lawyer, Department for Transport Legal Team, Government Legal Department. For services to the Legal Profession.

Lieutenant Colonel Douglas Nelson (BEng 1999). For services to the military.

Professor Simon Saunders, Honorary Professor at the University’s Smart Internet Lab.  For services to Telecommunications.

Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) 

Professor Andrew Carr (MB ChB 1982, ChM 1989). Deputy Chair of the University’s Board of Trustees. For services to Orthopaedic Research and Training.   

Christopher Norman Davies (BSc 1978). For services to Running and to Health and Wellbeing.

Mr Niall Fry (BSc 2005). Team Leader, Global Health Security, Health and Security Department, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. For services to International Development.

Mr Thomas Hulme (BSc 1998). For services to the military.

Dr Philip John Hadley (MSc 1996). Lately International Market Development Director, Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board. For services to International Trade in Agriculture.

Dr Helen Jane Read (PhD 1987). Conservation Officer, City of London Corporation. For services to Conservation and to Arboriculture.

Medal of the Order of the British Empire (BEM)

Ms Susanna Louise Howard (BA 1996). Founder, Living Words. For services to Charity, to Mental Health and to the Arts.

Miss Donna Lisa Mitchell (BSc 1995). Senior Media Relations Manager, Network Rail.  For services to Railway Safety for Young People.

Dr John Anthony O’Connor (BSc 1974). Director, Angling Cymru. For services to Recreational Angling in Wales.

Miss Anne Prentis (Certificate of Education 1979). For services to the community in Great Ryburgh, Norfolk.

 

Earlier this year, we also celebrated three members of our alumni community who were recognised by Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in his Resignation Honours list.

Dame Theresa Villiers (LLB 1990). Former Member of Parliament for Chipping Barnet. For Political and Public Service.

Mr Cassian Horowitz (BSc 2013). Former Special Adviser to the Prime Minister. For Political and Public Service. 

Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) 

Mr Henry De Zoete (BSc 2003). Former Adviser to the Prime Minister on Artificial Intelligence. For Public Service.
