Alumni welcome new School of Accounting and Finance students

As our students started to arrive back to Bristol in October, or for those that embarked on their online learning from home,
our School of Accounting and Finance alumni were on hand to provide a warm welcome to new students at their first online lectures. Students were no doubt facing a different term of learning ahead and having our alumni there to welcome them helped bring the student experience to life.

Five graduates from the School of Accounting and Finance shared their experience with current students, giving advice from their studies at the University and details of their career development after graduation.

Dr Lei Wang, Lecturer in the School of Accounting and Finance, says: Students received useful and up to date guidance and information from the discussion, as well as an interesting conversation on the issues the pandemic is bringing to Accounting, Finance, and Economics globally”.

Alumnus Nick Xioa (MSc 2009) was on the call to students and advised them to make sure they take time and be proactive to plan their career paths in advance, providing reassurance for the year ahead:

“Don’t worry about making mistakes and don’t be shy about asking for guidance. Career planning is something you should be thinking about right now, not after you’ve graduated. Knowing what you want, what is available, and thoroughly research how you can get there. That gives you a stronger competitive advantage and will make it easier for you to stand out from the crowd.”

Dr Cam (Huikang) Ying (PhD 2015) provided some useful insight for our students as they embark on their learning this academic year:

“The shock from COVID-19 is asymmetric. Some countries abuse their monetary power to achieve economic growth while others pay the bills. It leaves us a more divided world.”

His thoughts, and those of the wider alumni communityare so helpful for our students as they begin to explore global trends in their studies.

If you, like Nick and Cam, are able to share your experience and insight with students, please sign up to our Volunteers Digest to keep in the loop with the latest opportunities and join Bristol Connects to be part of the community.
