Bristol alumni recognised in the King’s New Year Honours list 2024

Every year, the New Year Honours list recognises the achievements and services of extraordinary people who have made a commitment to our society. This year is no exception, and 27 of our remarkable Bristol alumni have been recognised for their services to health, community, education, the arts and more. We are extremely proud to showcase their achievements and incredible impact. 

The King’s New Year Honours

Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire 

Professor Dame Carol Black (BA 1962, MB ChB 1970, MD 1975, Hon DSc 2003) Independent Adviser on Combatting Drugs. Awarded for Public Service.  

Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (Damehood) 

Dr Jennifer Dixon (MB ChB 1984, Hon DSc 2016) Chief Executive, The Health Foundation. Awarded for services to the NHS and to Public Health. 

Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (Knighthood) 

Gregory Doran (BA 1980, Hon DLitt 2011) Artistic Director Emeritus, Royal Shakespeare Company. Awarded for services to the Arts.  

Athelstan Eavis (Hon MA 2006) Founder and Leader, Glastonbury Festival. Awarded for services to Music and to Charity. 

David Holmes (LLM 1990) Chief Executive Officer, Family Action. Awarded for services to Children and Families. 

Professor Neil Mortensen (MD 1977) Lately President, Royal College of Surgeons of England. Awarded for services to Surgery.

Companion of the Order of the Bath 

Polly Payne (BSc 1991) Director General, Policy, Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Awarded for Public Service.

Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) 

Dr Andrew Mackintosh (BSc 1976) Adviser, The Knowledge Assets Initiative. Awarded for services to Science and Technology, and to Enterprise Development. 

William Pease-Watkin (Bill Watkin) (BA 1981, CertEd 1983) Chief Executive, Sixth Form Colleges Association. Awarded for services to Further Education.  

Andrew Scattergood (BA 1998) Chief Executive Officer, The Royal Parks. Awarded for services to Heritage and to Charity. 

Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) 

Christopher Jolly (BSc 1968, Hon DSc 2017) Publisher, Jolly Phonics. Awarded for services to Education.  

Dr Teame Mebrahtu (MEd 1972, PhD 1980, former staff member) Awarded for services to Education, to Refugees and to the community in Bristol. 

Professor Richard Templer (BSc 1981) Lately Director of Innovation, Grantham Institute, Imperial College London. Awarded for services to Climate Innovation. 

Nigel Crewe-Read (BSc 1995) Defence personnel – Army Awards. 

Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) 

Dr Alison Hill (BSc 1972, MB ChB 1975) Chair, Bikeability Trust, and Chair, Cyclox. Awarded for services to Cycling. 

Kathryn Morley (BSc 1984) Lately Chief Executive Officer, OnSide. Awarded for services to Young People. 

Dr Gordon Richardson (BSc 1974, Hon LLD 2022) Treasurer, Walking Alliance. Awarded for services to Disability Access. 

Edward Warner (BSc 2002) Disability and Access Ambassador, Cabinet Office Disability Unit. Awarded for services to Disabled People. 

Maurice Weightman (PGCE 1967) Founding Chair and Trustee, Berwick Youth Project. Awarded for services to Young People in Berwick-Upon-Tweed.  

Timothy Conibear (BA 2005) Founder, Waves for Change. Awarded for services to Young People Overseas. 

Sophie Dyer (LLB 2005) Lately Counsellor, Trade Policy, British Embassy Tokyo, Japan. Awarded for services to Trade. 

Lowri Griffiths (LLB 1998) Head, Ocean Policy Unit, Legal Directorate, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Awarded for services to Ocean Protection.

Medal of the Order of the British Empire (BEM) 

Dr Fiona Butler (MB ChB 1988) Principal in General Practice, Health Partners at Violet Melchett. Awarded for services to the community in West London.  

Ian Clark (BA 1961, CertEd 1962) Awarded for services to the community in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. 

Sandy Mitchell (BSc 1962, MSc 1966, current staff member) Chair of Trustees, Lockleaze Sports Centre. Awarded for services to Sport in Bristol. 

Member of the Royal Victorian Order 

Hannah Evans (BA 2010) Programme Manager, Household of The Princess Royal.  

 

Resignation Honours

Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) 

Sophie Jarvis (BA 2015) Awarded for public service as Special Adviser from July 2019 to October 2022 at the Department for International Trade (DIT), the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and 10 Downing Street.
