Following the success of the inaugural event last year, the Bristol Alumni Network presents the Spring Showcase 2022, which will take place from 18 to 19 March 2022. During the weekend you’ll be able to take part in a series of digital events which all celebrate digging and dinosaurs.
You’ll hear from the School of Earth Science’s Professor Mike Benton (OBE, FRS FRSE), who will introduce the science behind dinosaur biology. He’ll be joined by Tim Haines, the BAFTA-award-winning maker of the 1999 BBC series Walking with Dinosaurs, who will be speaking about how filmmakers have brought dinosaurs to life on our screens over the years.
Also in attendance will be Professor Mark Horton, who is hosting a special live Q&A session around recent work on Iron Age remains discovered on a Time Team dig, which he directed 20 years ago.
The Department of Geology and the School of Earth Sciences will be looking back through their archives to celebrate some of their key milestones and successes, especially in fieldwork. Earth Sciences alumni are invited to share their photos and memories to contribute to an online curated collection.
The event will culminate with our own version of University Challenge which includes two of last year’s teams who are returning to defend their titles!
The event is being organised by volunteers from the Bristol Alumni Network. Charles Gunter (BSc 2006, PGCE 2007, MSc 2009), a member of the event’s steering group said:
“Organising this weekend has brought staff, students and alumni together who would never have otherwise worked with each other. The event being online enables us to engage with alumni all over the world and connect our current students with members of our international alumni community.”
Were you part of an Earth Sciences society when you were a student? If so, you might be interested in attending the weekend’s Student Showcase. You’ll hear from students in subject-specific societies connected to Earth Sciences as they talk about what they have been up to recently and their future plans. The societies are keen to hear from former members about their experiences when they were students.
All of the Spring Showcase 2022 events are free. See our full events programme for more information and to book your place.
